Organelles That Build Proteins Ribosomes: Ribosomes are where the proteins come together. The amino acids to make the protein are first assembled in the ribosomes. Once the base amino acids are assembled in the ribosomes they are then injected into the rough endoplasmic reticulum. Endoplasmic Reticulum: In the rough endoplasmic reticulum proteins are chemically modified. Proteins made on the rough ER include those that will be released, or secreted, from the cell as well as many membrane proteins and proteins destined for lysosomes and other specialized locations within the cell. Once this process is completed, the protein gets a molecular "address tag", leaves the ER, and enters a vesicle to travel to the golgi apparatus. Vesicles: The vesicle moves the protein from the ER into the golgi apparatus. Golgi Apparatus: The golgi apparatus is like the "customization shop" for proteins. It does the last bits of fine-tuning before the protein is released into the cell or secreted somewhere else. It modifies, sorts, and packages the protein for either storage or secretion. Once the protein is done in the golgi apparatus it is ready to be "shipped" to its final destination. |
