The Endosymbiotic Theory was proposed over a century ago and hypothesizes that mitochondria and other organelles are descendants of prokaryotic organisms. It states that when early eukaryotes were coming about some prokaryotes entered them and had a symbiotic relationship with the cell. This means that the prokaryotic cell did not harm the eukaryotic cell; instead, it started helping the cell with some operations. Evidence for this theory comes from the fact that mitochondria have not only a membrane but also DNA as part of their systems. This is used as evidence to support the theory. |
